If you're a newcomer to the world of lighting, you may want to brush up on the types of lighting that will work in your home.
Once that is done, read on for my top tips for getting your lighting right!
Firstly, to plan your lighting, create a floor plan of the room or home you are lighting, including the placement of furniture. This will give you a general idea of where you want your lighting to spill.
Pendants can work as task lighting - lighting for a particular task or job, like working, reading or cooking - but think carefully about how you position them or they could quite literally cause you a headache!
Use an assortment of lights and lamps to create your accent or feature lighting and, if you’re lucky enough to live in a period home, consider accent lighting to illuminate moldings or corbels and show them off to their best advantage.
Fit as many of your lights and lamps with dimmers, so you can adjust the brightness of rooms with the changing of the hours or your mood. This is particularly important in living areas if you don’t want your home to resemble an airport concourse!
Likewise, be creative with your lighting layers, with different combinations of functional, accent and task lighting, but avoid using all three together at the same time or you’ll risk over kill.
If a room has more than one exit install switches at each, likewise install switches at the tops and bottoms of stairs. You’ll save yourself a lot of dancing around in the dark if you do.
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of a beautiful open fireplace as a lighting source. The flickering light of the flames coupled with soft overhead lighting will make your lounge room a comfortable and inviting space to talk, relax and reconnect with friends and family.
Taking time to plan the sources and placement of your home lighting, and the mood you want to create in the different spaces within your home, will help you create a space you feel happy, relaxed in and drawn to time and time again.
